Powerfully heartbreaking and heart fulfilling!
Stockett writes a magnificent story in The Help. She brings the early sixties in Jackson, Mississippi alive, through both the "colored maids" and the "white ladies." I had watched the movie years ago, but never read the book, and now I am so glad that I did. It was compelling, and I savored every word, and became attached to Aibileen, but Minny and Miss Skeeter as well. Aibileen shows what dedicate and compromise is, and that she's more than just The Help, she's done the child-rearing, taking care of white families, and does that while still mourning the loss of her only son. Minny is Aibileen's best friend, and has it worse at home than even at work, and yet, she's strong. I am so glad I read this book, this paperback, which now is on the shelf, waiting to be read again. This title is from my personal reading collection, but also a definite recommendation by Amy's Bookshelf Reviews. I look forward to reading many more stories by this author.
