Excerpt:
They turn to their favorite Christian station on the radio as the van slowly accelerates, singing along suddenly, a truck next to them swerves into their lane causing James to swerve into oncoming traffic. Horns blow and the smell of burnt rubber enters the cabin. James fights the steering wheel, left then right, trying to dodge the speeding vehicles.
The van nearly topples over but he is fighting with everything he has to save them from a wreck. His heart is in his throat; his palms grip the steering wheel tight. God save us, his mind screams. He swerves from one lane to the next, horns blare as other cars collide around him with sickening thuds. Glass crushing, screeching tires, and smoke are all around them.
In the blink of an eye, a transfer truck collides with them. “No!” James screams. The children scream at the top of their lungs, and smoke begins pouring into the van.
“Get out of the van now!” James yells at his family.
Anne is yelling, scrambling to release her seatbelt.
“Dad! My seatbelt is stuck!” Daniel yells.
“I will help you,” Micah yells back while trying to undo his brother’s seat belt.
A small spark changes everything. BOOM! The van is now engulfed in flames. Anne manages to roll out of the van, but the boys are screaming. James throws opens the back door of the van, yanking a panicked Micah out.
There is another explosion and Daniel’s screams fill the air. Daniel is scared and in pain. A frantic James attempts to fight the flames to reach his son. The seatbelt is stuck but James pulls with all of his might to break his son free from the flames after a few tugs the belt begins to break after giving it a final pull the seat belt breaks free at last. His body is badly burned and tears are falling from his eyes. James holds his son close to him as he screams for help. “God!" he cries out, "help me!
