Poet Showcase: Annette Whitaker-Moss

About Annette:

Many authors write about what they know. That’s true for Annette Whitaker-Moss. Through poetry and fiction, she

explores her own experiences and expands on them in hopes that others will be able to relate to her and possibly learn from what she’s gone through. Growing up in Houston, Texas, Annette began writing poetry at a very early age. She created her first anthology during middle school. Her ability to express herself in that form of writing led to her first published book of poetry.

Once she achieved her goal of writing a book of poetry, Annette went on to write a novel, something that she had planned to do as a challenge to herself. She believes that her words can help others overcome their troubles and that no one is isolated in them. Her expressions of faith, joy, pain, and love are what encourage her to keep writing her poetry to connect to people on a different level. That was the motivation behind her first published book of poems, and is now her key to becoming the writer she always hoped to be.

In One Heart to Another, a love story is told in verse, from finding love to losing it and then finding it again. Each poem is a representation of a spiritual journey that documents a time in the author’s life that many readers will be able to relate to. Good Kid in Trouble chronicles a teenager’s life and the typical struggles young people face. Based on a true story, her book is evidence that using yourself as a model for a character in your book sometimes allows for an authentic story. Likewise, with Shundra Henderson, Thorns and Roses, a beautiful young lady reminiscing over life’s ups and downs while admitting that her struggles from adolescent to adulthood, almost raped to incest, promiscuous behaviors to consequences, good sex, no sex, and mental and physical abuse were real. In Another Heart to Another, a desire to be loved is questioned in verse, from neglect to reasoning, and then back to love and the resolution.

Annette wants to someday write a best-seller, but until then, she’s happy with helping others realize the value in their lives and regaining the joy that they maybe oppressing.
